Formula sucks
K will be on formula for the next week. She gained 3 oz in the past week, and her pediatrician wanted about 7 oz. I'll be giving the formula through an supplemental nursing system (SNS) at the breast and pumping like crazy. She's supposed to get 20 oz. of formula a day and I can nurse at night. I just want whatever needs to happen for her to be able to go back to exclusive breastfeeding as soon as possible and her to grow in a healthy way.

I am so so sorry!!! If you're interested, I have info on homemade formula. I feel SO much better about giving it to Abigail.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry! I hesitate giving "advice" because I know you've tried so much. I don't want it to come across the wrong way. But have you contacted La Leche League? My league leader suggested a Breastfeeding Doctor-I didn't know there was such a thing! It seems like you have a great doctor-but maybe there's an even better one out there.

ReplyDeleteJust to make sure, you are nursing before every feeding with formula, right? Becuase if you aren't that would be a recipe to completely decrease your supply. Did you check out kellymom.com? It is really helpful.
Also, I understand that lack of support. My husband fed my baby a bottle when I didn't know and my sister told me to stop nursing. It was hard. But you know as a mother what is right for your baby and don't let anyone tell you anything different.
Did you look into the lactation blend by vitanica? It really helped me (and Sew).
The pumping just basically sucks. I would hook myself up and have a couple fingers free to cruise the internet. That was when I would check the boards at kellymom and check other blogs.

ReplyDeleteYou get used to the formula. As Tridentine Wife said, forumla isn't that bad. Breast is best, but formula is a good substitute and your baby will still thrive on it. Any breast milk you give your child is good, even if it's not 100%. And if you need to supplement, that's fine, too.
ReplyDeleteIt took awhile for me to accept that fact. We've been pumping and supplementing with formula for eight months since my milk never really came in. Kate's thriving. In spite of what you hear, pumping won't necessarily decrease your supply. Mine increased from when I initially started, in fact. It's not great, but it's better than it was.
I do hope you are able to go back to exclusively breastfeeding, eventually. Pumping is a pain, and getting the formula bottles ready takes more time than it does to breastfeed. You do what you have to, though
So sorry the weight gain was not quite there ~ hang in there. I am so glad that you are using a supplemental system (I forgot to mention yesterday) ~ it all is really tough but you have a lot of support and I know it will come together and she will start gaining faster soon.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if you've heard of HM4HB (human milk for human babies) on facebook. it's a site (well, one for each state, and numerous countries around the world), where mommas with breastmilk to spare and mommas in need of breastmilk post. We've gotten milk from more than 10 mommas to date that allow baby E to be completed breastmilk fed (we adopted). Just a thought, if you're interested.
ReplyDeleteBtw, I have been using the SNS for 9 months and have found it easiest to tape on the part with the tubes and leave it all on all, just cleaning it out separately than the bottle part (if that makes sense).
Additionally, fenugreek and blessed thistle are great for increasing supply as is domperidone (which has to be ordered from Canada or the UK), but IS legal here.
